Sound of ice

Mawson Diary, 1955-56
Remembering the South
brings very little exhilaration
to annul the sense of loss.
The ship's engines are very smug.
They hammer and thud with self-congratulatory ease
but can't drown the recollections
of a lone penguin's call.
27.01.1955
A long whine,
almost a horse's whinny
comes from the ice
and at times
strangely like a bird call.
Voice: Jack Ward
Mawson Diary, 1955-56
The animation, Ice sound was also made
in response to these words.
