Aqualux
Peter Charuk, Aqualux II Video installation, 2005.
Aqualux II: '... in the midst of this fire that burns not ...' is an immersive video installation which uses the idea that information gathered for the video is mediated by a number of devices or membranes. The membrane of the skin, the iris and cornea, video lens, the computer screen monitor, the video projection lens, the surface of water and its refractive qualities.
The membrane becomes a protective device for the imagery which takes both natural and unnatural forms. It also becomes the perceptive device for the audience, transmitting information from one world to another.
The video and its installation share a common technical focus. It draws on an innovative mediated reality realized by the CSIRO as a project to map sectors of the ocean using new stereo video technologies. This technology gives a unique view of what is unseen and what seems a silent world to most.
This still is taken from a point in the video where two diverse video sequences provide an editing 'gestalt' between the two stereo views of the image - a seal morphs into one of the scientists.
