Margaret Whitelaw Elephant seal 2008

At a tremendous gait he lolloped out of the sea, snorting and rampaging the whole time until he stopped for a breather near high-water mark. It was then he suddenly caught a glimpse of me and straightaway he raised his colossal floppy bulk twelve feet in the air, almost standing on his massive hind flippers. His bulbous, trunk-like nose began to swell as he drew in a deep breath. Then when his lungs could hold no more, he forcibly expended the air to produce a sound that can only be likened to the deflated splutterings of a pricked balloon.
