Stephen Eastaugh Immersion suit and tie ( Southern Ocean) 2007
A survival or immersion suit can keep you alive in the polar waters for some hours rather than some minutes if dressed in anything else. Hypothermia kills rapidly so we have this hi-tech suit that floats, keeps you warm, self inflates and shines which all increases your chance of survival in a situation that is extremely dire. I have tried such a suit on during an Antarctic training course but never used one in the water. Another item of clothing that was available to me in Antarctica was a formal synthetic tie with penguin logo. I have melded these two conflicting pieces of clothing in this work. Stitching the rather silly formal male dress embellishment with a suit designed to keep you alive together was a marriage of extremes. I have been in the Southern seas with 16 metre waves so have thought. “What wilI I wear ?” on a number of evenings.
