frozen
19th. March 1955 Mawson
For two days the entire sea has frozen - a bank rough white close to shore and leaden further out. The aspect is mournful and so still that at first you wonder what has happened.
Jack Ward, Radio operater, Australian Antarctic Division, Mawson 1955
The FTO (Field Training Officer)
'Come with me', he said,
'it will be all right'.
We put crampons on our feet
and he led me up the nunatak.
'One slip and you would slide', he said,
'down into the frozen lake'.
Mount Henderson, near Mawson 2002
