The wizened face of the glacier makes the lower slopes formidable but the great smooth gradients of snowfields higher up gives it a languorous welcoming look. Along the coast are other glaciers. Challenger and Baudissan are heavily crevassed; one like a petrified giant forest, its dark crevasses like gloomy spaces between dead trees. A glowing emerald tinge forms as the sun illuminates a different face. (Mawson Diary, 23 January 1955)
