Stephen Eastaugh, The jolly
Vestfold Hills 2003

In Antarctica this term refers to a short journey away from a station that is usually recreational but often invlolving work. Without a doubt the majestic landscape or icescape demands further exploration but occassionally the confined, limited and routine space of any station can become too cosy. A jolly helps to let off steam like a short holiday to eleviate unpleasant feelings of cabin fever. This work places a few miniscule red figures in the alien terrain of the Vestfold Hills where I have made a number of jollies. The meandering line displays an historical exploration route or perhaps a cartographic jolly.
