Non - existent islands have been recorded on may old maps especially in the Southern ocean. Now, this is not possible, due to precise satellite mapping techniques. Some of these islands were in fact volcanic outcrops that did exist but have since exploded. Other islands were actually icebergs with dust or green algae on them, some were reflections of other islands due to the icy skies of the Polar climate. Some were lies or desperate hopes.
During a dozen voyages across the Southern Ocean I have seen the phenomena of Fata Morgana several times. These mirages seduced me into making this cartographically lost work. I have stitched the islands roughly like an antique style map to make tactile that which is not. The names of the E.D. (existence doubted) islands plotted in this painting are as follows - The Chimneys, Thompson Island, Pagoda Rock, Trulsklippen, Royal Company Island, Emerald Island, Nimrod Island, Macy's Island, Swain's Island, Elizabethides, Burwood's Island, Middle Island, Isla Grande, New South Greenland, Aurora Islands, Strathfillan Rocks, Undine Rock, Sevilla Rocks and Keats Island. There existence now is right off the map but as I am fond of dislocation the islands now reappear in this Southern Ocean work.
