The paintings above are part of a series I've been working on that I call "300 Blue Whales". I started out painting whale bones from an abandoned whaling station in Antarctica because they were so beautiful and the place was so haunting. When I was in Antarctica, I had hoped to see a Blue Whale but didn't think much about it when we didn't see any. Recently, (now nearly 10 years since I was in Antarctica!) I found out that there are not many more than 300 blue whales left in the Antarctic seas due to aggressive whaling in the first half of the 20th century. I decided that I would do a series of 300 paintings to honor these beautiful animals.
