Visual & verbal metaphors

From an airport in Amsterdam, artist Stephen Eastaugh sends me words to add to the Antarctic Thesaurus.

In naming his Antarctic artworks, he infuses familiar words with unfamiliar meanings. His street in The corner of Sublime and Slushy Streets, Casey, 2000, is like no street known to a city person. Positioning this work in the Thesaurus, I add the word ‘street’, with its Antarctic meaning defined by the image.

.
The “mirror” is used by William Fox to suggest how Antarctica can be a place where we find ourselves. See ‘The Mirror and the Eye’, the first chapter of his Terra Antarctica (2007).

Stephen Eastaugh stitches into his images, to “mirror” the tracks of Antarctic explorers.
