Being part of the Sur Polar event helped my understanding of the profound connections that some have made with Antarctica – the artists and scientists who have experienced it, and their audiences. I found validation for some of Antarctic experiences through the artwork, and interviewing artists. For example, the feeling of connectedness with other people and places around the world, was share by many who had been. Anywhere you point to from Antarctica points you to everywhere else in the world. You get a sense of being at the heart of the unknown.

.

I have finally arrived in London, where I have a quiet space, and time, to write about this.

The major part of my thesis however will be practice-based, however. It is about my own understanding of how experiencing Antarctica has change me, articulated through making objects and animations. I experienced in Antarctica a profound sense of connection with other places and other people. So incorporating imagery, sounds and voices of others who have experienced Antarctica, together with my own imagery, is vital for articulating this.

I am in London differently now. This is London without my father. I am alone here, to work in isolation about Antarctica, to animate connections.

It is a year now since formally starting this study. I have collected a lot of material which which to work, and have made some objects and animations. Now I will make some animations from what I have collected in Buenos Aires – drawings, photos, sound recordings – things that caught my eye and ear. Here I will find things within me and around me that connect with these.
