Sitting in the sun on a park bench this afternoon, I breathed my last breath of Buenos Aires (Good Air). Now waiting for a taxi to the airport, I transcribe on the Hotel computer. By trial and error, I am slowly figuring out this keyboard. It’s as if someone has rearranged about a third of the keypads so they don’t write what their icons indicate. And there are the upside down question marks, which I’ve never seen till now.
.
So…
How can we respond to the texts of Antarctica, to what those who have worked there have communicated through their texts? I realise I keep repeating the same questions, often. But every time I ask them, I understand them differently.
What is already inside us that we can find to connect with what artists, scientists and support personnel have expressed?
Is there a difference between intended and received meanings?
.
Participants will each be given a journal for their drawing and writing.
.
Premise for the first workshop…
Through moving and drawing we can learn to read each other.
1.
Begin as individuals…alone, as we are born into the world.
Explore the SPACE, TIME and ENERGY THAT IS AVAILABLE TO US…mindful of the impact of our actions on ourselves, each other and our environment. Talk through, as we move, what is meant by space, time and energy…Ref. Laban interpretation.
2.
Explore …in your personal sphere…ways of moving through SPACE…up, down, forwards, backwards, sideways.
3.
Explore linear and circuitous pathways, with body drawing LINES in space.
4.
Experience transitions and stillness between different pathways as part of the dance. Life pathways have periods of transition and stillness between thm.
Talk amongst ourselves and note key words to describe our experience.
5.
Working with a partner, take turns to lead and follow our explorations of SPACE…as in 1, and then find ways to transform our partner’s movement to become our own.
6.
Repeat 5. as a shared drawing *brush and ink(…working together on the same piece of paper.
.
7.
Responding to an Antarctic text *eg A piece of jewelry, an object, a video, a sound, an animation…
Discussion…Use Laban analysis…use of space in this instance only…to read the text. i.e. Ask, How is space used in this text and what effect does this have.
Working as a whole group, take turns to move, draw and photograph. Move and draw in response to the text. Photograph what gestures others make … moving and drawing…that catch our eye..i.e. capture key gestures.
8.
Discussion…writing…what did we find within ourselves to connect with the text.
.
Other workshops explore the use of TIME and ENERGY.
Participants can share all material for their oun arts practice.
Note…
*no question marks of brackets on this keyboard}….
