Reading images with images

I receive this image from my writer friend, Carmel Bird:

It reminds her, she said, of another image, which she sent to me in 2003, and has become the animated Sailing girl.

Carmel writes,

I am attaching a scan of a Munch painting – the figure on the left reminds me of the statue in Barcelona. It is called ‘Separation 1896’. Munch seems to be more interested in the figure on the right.

On the Information screen behind the animation, I place this image next to a picture of the Barcelona statue. I include another image, also called ‘Separation’, which I made. This image evokes the day I left for Antarctica, in the middle of an electrical storm in Hobart.

Carmel replies,

Perfect.
And seeing them together like that – they are related – except the statue is more confident, happier too. But perhaps my perception of the Munch girl is coloured by the grim aspect of the right hand side of the picture.
