Fred Elliott explains the mechanics of Antarctic landscape, saying that to draw it is to know it. Also, he said, you can’t really know Antarctic landscape unless you’ve been there for at least a year, and seen its changes.
He showed me the book Explore Antarctica, by Louise Crossley (1995), for information on Antarctic science, and gave me Lady spy, gentleman explorer – the double life of Herbert Dyce Murphy (Rossiter, 2001),

He also suggested also that I look at Simon Barley’s bamboo sculptures, and I found this picture on the Chameleon Arts website:
Fred knew Simon, and I later find he was well known among my son’s climbing community.
Sadly, he died just recently – a sad loss for climbing and arts communities around the world.
