  1. Lisa,

Really enjoying the growth of the animations, particularly, the ice crystal animation. There is a delicacy of touch through the work that I think exemplifies your approach to animation. I am working on the crystal idea as well but in a totally different context, creating ice crystals as lenses to view the world through.

For me the sound is not quite working. I felt the choice of the Jon Hizzard piece was very appropriate but the mic conway piece overwhelmed your delicate animation but I can see where you are coming from with it.

Off topic: I have just attended the Sydney Harmonica Festival a couple of weeks ago and had the pleasure of meeting Jim Conway, Mic’s brother who has MS. He is a wonderful person and creative harmonica player who gave a great workshop and performance. He also signed my copy of his how-to -play harmonica book 😉

  2. Peter,

    Your comments are encouraging. Thanks.

If you’re creating ice crystals as lenses, you may be interested in Harvey and Ackroyd, two of the artists who participated in the Cape Farewell project, which I wrote about here.

They made a sphere of ice clear enough to be used as a lens to focus the sun, and used the crystallization process as a way of making images.

Building a pin-hole camera from a block of snow, they used it to focus images on a screen of ice.

They also tried to build a big enough ice lens to burn something.

I agree that the sound of Mic Conway’s song isn’t quite working with the delicacy of the animations. Mic’s response to the animation, when he saw it with his sound, was “Simple ,cute , effective”. I’m integrating further images into the animation, in response to the content and qualities of his song. So, things balancing – house and two cars/the bush; work/play…

I’m just about to receive some of Jon Hizzard’s latest work, and will similarly be listening for different perspectives.

This is the kind of dialogue I have been hoping would emerge. I just need to keep animating!

I was at High School with Mic Conway. I only recently learned, watching his new DVD, that he has been singing ‘Balancing Time’ since those very early days.

Will we hear your harmonica through your ice crystal lenses?

    I’m intrigued!
